This mini-texturing tool hardware parts kit provides the hardware necessary for you to build a superbtexturing tool. (You provide a scrap of wood of yourchoice to turn for the handle.) Once built, the mini-texturing tool allows a woodturner to enhancethe texture of a workpiece’s surface after the woodturning is complete. It can be used to decorate your turnedboxes (such as the ones shown illustrated above), bottle stoppers, pens, finials, bowls and hollow forms, as well as almost any other kind of workpiece turned on a lathe.
The hardware parts kit for building the tool includes two bearings, a collet, a brass tube, and two rare earth magnets for holding the cutter in the collet. A high-quality HSS cutter with 1/8″ shank is also provided (Dremel #134 HSS cutter). (Other 1/8″-shank cutters are optionally available.)
After you have created your homemade mini-texturing tool by turning your own handle and attaching the partsincluded in the hardware parts kit, you can use it to decorate a workpiece by simply holding the edge of the HSS cutteragainst the workpiece as your lathe spins it. We have had good results using lathe speeds ranging between 500 and 1500 RPM, depending on the type of wood and the diameter of the workpiece.
